Air-dried soil or geochemical sample (0.1-0.3 g) was placed over a layer of 3 g anhydrous potassium pyrosulfate in a Pt crucible and was covered with a 2 g layer of the same. The crucible was placed in a furnace for 5 h at 800°C. After cooling, Ti was extracted with 2M-HCl and the silica precipitate removed by filtration. HCl was added to the filtrate to a final volume of 100 ml. One or two drops of 6M-NaOH was added to 5 ml of the resulting solution, before 5 ml sodium acetate/acetic acid buffer solution of pH 3.8, 8 ml absolute ethanol and 2 ml 6-(4-nitrophenylazo)-3,4,5-trihydroxy benzoic acid were added. The absorbance was measured at 495 nm. The calibration range was 0.04-1 µg/ml (ɛ = 34 800) and a RSD of 0.35% (n = 20). The effect of foreign substances on Ti determination was investigated.
