英文摘要	In 1991 a Ch inese2German Jo in t Expedit ion invest igated on the degradat ion of vege2 tat ion and so il, as w ell as the recen t dune fo rmat ion cau sed by overgrazing in the upper catchmen t area of the Huanghe R iver in the Zo ige d Basin (Ruoergai P lateau). Sands of ancien t dunes, sand f ields and sandy loess are remob ilised and increased w here the ground su rface w as hummocky and undu lated. A f ter all overgrazing by b ig herds w as due to popu lat ion grow th and liberal po licy af ter the cu ltu re revo lu t ion. Becau se of dif2 feren t indicat ion of the arid w in ter halfyear w ith mon th ly p recip itat ion below 15mm and the st rong no rthw esterly sto rm s the term (moun tain ) desert if icat ion can be u sed. By mean s of a con t ro lled classif icat ion of a L andsat TM scenery differen t landscape un it s in2 cluding dunes and degraded areas cou ld be registered. A f ter a f irst analysis of test area of 944km2 abou t 30% of the pastu ral grounds w ere classif ied as spare (degraded) mead2 ow vegetat ion and w ere endangered by the desert if icat ion p rocesses. No t on ly the meth2 ods to 3 dunes in o rder to resist desert if icat ion are necessary, bu t also reduct ion of the life stock and con t ro lled ro tat ion of pastu res. Befo rehand it shou ld be en su red that the nomads accep ted these necessary measu res.
