Experimental investigation of web-stiffened cold-formed lipped channel columns

英文摘要In order to investigate the compression behavior of the cold-formed lipped channel column with an inter-mediate longitudinal stiffener on the web, a total of 18 specimens with pinned-ended conditions were tested statically. It is shown that both the loading position and the end supporting condition have significant effects on the buckling modes and the ultimate bearing capacities of the specimens, while the column length only has observable influence on the buckling mode. Due to the presence of the web-stiffener, the column performs generally higher ultimate strength under negative load eccentricity conditions compared with the positive load eccentricity conditions, while the ultimate strength of the column under axial compression performs just between results under the two former conditions. Through comparison between the test results and the closed-form solution results proposed for beam-columns, it is found that the closed-form solution for beam-columns may not be appropriate for the negative load eccentricity conditions. Furthermore, the tested specimens were also numerically investigated by finite element program of ANSYS. Geometric and material nonlinearities were included in the finite element models of the columns. It is demonstrated that the numerical analysis can closely predict the ultimate strength and the buckling behavior of the tested columns. © 2017, Editorial Office of Journal of Building Structures.
