英文摘要 | White etching area (WEA) as a primary subsurface damage in rolling contact fatigue has been studied extensively. But the issues of what the essence of WEA is and how it is formed has been remained unclear. The present paper assumes that WEA could be in essence adiabatic shear bands (ASBs) which are generated in high strain rate dynamic loading. High strain rate impact tests were conducted on AISI 52100 in order to verify the assumption. Detailed comparisons of ASBs and WEA were made in terms of morphologies, compositions, grain refinement mechanism and carbides dissolution. It is proposed that WEA in the subsurface of rolling contact fatigue could be ASBs in essence. Both are responses of the material to dynamic plastic instability and are damage modes under dynamic loading. Through studying the crack initiation and propagation in ASBs, it was found that WEC form in different ways at inclusions and non-inclusions. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd |
