Analysis on the Temporal Variation of Environmental Impact using the STIRPAT model-A Case Study in Sichuan Province, China

英文摘要Human activities have dramatically altered the global environment, but the knowledge of the specific forces driving those impacts is not fully understood for lack of suitable method. STIRPAT model provides a simple analyzing framework for decomposing the impact of human activities on environment. Taking Sichuan Province of China as an example, we took the total energy consumption as the index of environmental impact and the STIRTPAT model was utilized to analyze the anthropogenic driving forces of environmental impact. In order to avoid the negative effect caused by collinearity among independent variables themselves, the Ridge Regression (RR) method was used to simulate the model. The results showed that population is the most significant driving force of environmental impact, 1% change in population would induce 1.46% change in total energy consumption; energy intensity also have a positive but relative smaller effect on environmental impact, 1% change in energy intensity may lead to 0.68% change in total energy consumption. According to the analysis of affluence elasticity (EE(A)), the relationship between affluence and environmental impact changes from inelastic(0.78)to elastic(1.02) as affluence increases in 1990-2008, which means the classic inverted U-shaped environmental Kuznets curve does not exist in Sichuan, suggesting that further economic develop may continue to increase environmental impact in Sichuan Province.
