英文摘要PURPOSE:To scarcely generate a lock-in phenomenon and to reduce in size an entire device by composing a substantially circular optical waveguide of a light emitting element and an optical resonator, cutting out part of the waveguide, and inserting a Faraday element. CONSTITUTION:An optical resonator of an output light of a light emitting element 19 is composed of a substantially circular optical waveguide 14 provided on a gyro board 12, and a light turning in one direction and a light turning in the other direction exist in mixture in the resonator. A beat signal is obtained through a directional coupler 16, a Y-type branched coupler 17 and a photodetector 18A, and the rotating angular speed of the resonator can be detected by the frequency of the signal. Part of the waveguide 14 is partly cut out, and a Faraday element 20 is inserted to provide a desired phase difference between the light turning in one direction and the light turning in the other direction in the resonator. Since an optical fiber is not used, a large scale lock-in phenomenon caused by the internal scattering of the fiber does not occur, and the waveguide is reduced in size, and hence the entire device can be reduced in size.
