英文摘要	1374870 Lasers WESTERN ELECTRIC CO 8 Aug 1972 [9 Aug 1971] 36968/72 Heading H1C An optical pulse modulator comprises an amplifier 11 whose gain can be switched between two values and a saturable absorber 12 which absorbs the amplifier output when the gain is low but which is saturated when the gain is high so that the ratio of the pulse amplitudes emitted by the amplifier is increased. In Fig. 1 both the amplifier and absorber are PN junction diode laser bodies; the amplifier faces are provided with anti-reflection coatings to prevent oscillation, while the body 12 has zero or reverse bias to make it absorb. Light emitted by laser source 13 is pulsed and provides an optical input to amplifier 13 and a timing signal to encoder 14. When a digital 0 is to be transmitted the encoder gives no output and the amplifier gain is unity; the pulse from source 13 thus passes through the amplifier and is largely absorbed at 12. When a digital 1 is to be transmitted the encoder gives a current output which increases the amplifier bias and hence its gain. The pulse from source 13 is thus amplified enough to saturate the absorber for transmission. The source 13 may be a Q switched Ga-As laser; the amplifier may be a Ga-As junction, a single or a double heterojunction laser.
