【Abstract】The study of the history of ethnic groups in southern China has been deeply influenced by Western research paradigms as well as by domestic and international politics over the past 100 years. As a result, a series of rigid interpreta- tional frameworks have evolved which have become an academic inertia. This inertia has,to some extent, distorted our understanding of the real history of ethnic groups in southern China. This paper argues that while the academic study of the Chinese ethnic history and ethnic politics are inseparable, ethnic historians should maintain independence and objectivity in their academic pursuits. They should try to overcome the inertia rising from long practice of using established interpretational models Mid pay more attention to the specific social, economic Mid cultural processes of the ethnic groups. Only by breaking out of the constraints of this inertia can scholars contribute to our policy-mddng toward ethnic issues without being influenced by prejudice resulting from overriding the special socio-cultural circumstMices of ethnic groups in southern China.;
