A preliminary study on surface-enhanced Raman scattering from Au and Au@Pd nanocubes for electrochemical applications

英文摘要Au nanocubes with controllable size were synthesized by using a wet chemical method. The nanocubes with a side length of 83 +/- 3 nm show the highest surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity using pyridine as the probe molecule. These nanocubes were then coated with controllable Pd shell thickness by controlling the amount of H2PdCl4 salt in the Au nanocube solution. These Au@Pd nanocubes were characterized by SEM and HRTEM, demonstrating that they are of core-shell structure with single crystal facets {100}. Boosted by the long-range effect of the enhanced electromagnetic field generated by the highly SERS-active Au cube, the originally low surface enhancement of Pd can be substantially improved. The SERS activity of carbon monoxide adsorbed at the core-shell Au@Pd nanocubes is much higher than that of the massive roughened Pd electrode. This preliminary result may point a promising future of using SERS to characterize the surface process occurring on single crystal surfaces.
