; With ongoing urban motorization and suburbanization in China, traditional business districts are facing development challenges and opportunities for upgrading. Taking Jiefangbei Business District in Chongqing as an example, this paper analyzes the pedestrian transportation development potential and main problems based on PLPS survey, questionnaires and interviews with local business owners. The paper proposes six planning strategies for establishing a pedestrian transportation network accomodating pedestrian travel with different characteristics and a high-quality public space system with multiple functionalities. The paper proposes the design guidelines for eight different types of pedestrian transportation spaces – subway plazas, main pedestrian spaces, city streets, slow streets, alleyways, etc. Finally, the paper discusses the short-term demonstration projects and design proposals.
