; Plane strain (channel-die) compression tests have been carried out at room temperature and 150℃ on the magnesium alloy AZ31 up to a strain of ε=0.1 at a strain rate of 0.01 s~ -1 . The effect of initial crystal orientation was examined by cutting samples from a highly textured hot-rolled sheet with the compression axis oriented at differing angles to the normal direction of the hot-rolled sheet. The microstructure and texture of the deformed samples were characterized using the electron backscattered diffraction technique, and the information obtained used to analyze the twinning and slip activity. It was found that plastic deformation is controlled by a mixture of {1012}<1011> extension twinning and basal plane slip. A continuous dependence of the contributions of each of these deformation modes on the initial crystal orientation was found, with extension twinning dominating in samples compressed perpendicular to the unit cell c-axis direction.; 国家重点基础研究发展计划(973)(No.2007CB613703); 国际科技合作计划项目(No.2006DFA51160)
